Episode 3 Progress

Well, writing continues. SDL 3 is now up to page 29 as rough pencilling. This presents a problem, I'm not sure yet weather or not I can finish the story in only 10 pages. In fact it might be an uncomfortable situation where the book needs 20 or 30 more pages, leaving a shortfall for book 4, or perhaps I'll have to chop 3 shorter, which I'm pretty sure I can do.

In fact, just writing about it here, I think I can figure how to set the chop point to end book 3....

Yes, got it.

OK, so, Surfing The Deathline is now going to be a four episode series, rather than the originally envisaged oneshot.

Jeez, that's a lot of work to go... Oh well, better get on with it.

Re: Episode 3 Progress

Unless your getting really sick of SDL, I'd make it longer rather than shorter. Trying to wrap something up badly could leave a reader feeling 'cheated'. Besides that, your dialogue is strong enough that you might be able to stretch things out to a full complete 4th issue. Alternatively you could have 'pinups' or another short story exploring a character within SDL that is good background info to SDL but not essential (even by another artist).

Re: Episode 3 Progress

Hey Matt,

Yeah, that's something I'm very aware of, hence why I'm leaning towards 4 issues - so I can give the requisite scenes sufficient gravitas.

What's good is I've been forced to really think a lot harder about how the book is concluded, and work from big key points which I can fill in, rather than being linear, so I'm playing from a stronger, more comfortable position as far as my writing style goes.

Re: Episode 3 Progress

Annnnd the big news, pencil roughing and writing on SDL 3 has concluded - all that remains is to actually do all the finished art (yeah, "all" heh).

Re: Episode 3 Progress

Well, two pages done, 37 to go. I wanted to get a really fevered dreamy, so-drunk-i-can-barely-see sort of feel for these opening pages (for specific mood and story reasons), so I tried experimenting with a really loose wacom painting style, something I've not tried all that much. Any comments? You may not be able to see much if your monitor is calibrated too dark, however.

Re: Episode 3 Progress

Well, I'm currently doing the fine-tuning to the layout for printing. There's been a bit of a substantial change in that it was going to be unaffordable to print at the normal comic book size. So, I've scaled the book to 137x210mm down from 170x260mm, and the costs have dropped into the sane zone. A nice side-effect of this is I'm able to manufacture the books using perfect binding, so they get a nice heavy card cover, with a proper spine and everything, rather than just being stapled.

With this, I'm going to reprint book 1 and 2 in the new format, which should carry through to the fourth book.

But lord there's some complexity involved in the resizing etc. It essentially requires rebuilding the book from scratch.. madness! MADNESS!

Re: Episode 3 Progress

Will the perfect binding lay flat? Although I like perfect binding, it's not so great if the spine itself isn't flexible.

Re: Episode 3 Progress

No, it won't lay flat when it's open, but saddle stitching a book so small and relatively thick means it won't stay closed. It will bow open at the centre (as well as each spread having to be adjusted inwards towards the centre to compensate for the distance around the fold so the outside margins line up).

What is done to compensate for this, is to add 5mm to the spine-side of each page, so that when you've got it open the inner margins are clear of the centre crevice.
